On September 29th I’ll be teaching three different dollmaking techniques:

1. Eyes Embroidery (with an optional eyelash and eyebrow) - 9 am - 11.30 am 2. Stuffing dolls with wool, using rolling technique - 12 pm - 2.30 pm. 3. Hair Making - 3 pm - 6 pm.

  1. Eyes Embroidery

    ‘The soul can speak through the eyes’ -G. A. Bécquer

In this class you will learn how to:

  • Decide on the shape of the eyes by sketching them first on paper. We will experiment with various shapes to achieve different facial expressions;

  • Find the right place on the face;

  • Use a template you made or trace the shape on the skin fabric the right way;

  • Not to distort the skin fabric under the embroidery;

  • Make the eyes appear symmetrical and proportional;

  • Get a proper thread tension and create a smooth, filled-in eye surface;

  • Create an eyelash and eyebrow, depending on facial expression.

You will be requested to bring a doll's head WITHOUT EYES, or if you take the class on Saturday on Face Sculpting, you will be able to use the ready-made head as a model for this class.

Embroidery floss in different colors will be provided.

2. Stuffing Dolls with wool, using the Rolling Technique

To use this stuffing technique properly could be a little tricky. In this class you will learn how to:

  • Choose and prepare the wool for the rolling technique;

  • Use the rolling tool;

  • Achieve super smooth and firmly stuffed doll's limbs;

  • Make the shape of a limb look more natural (not just straight), by adding some curviness to it (but I don’t recommend this stuffing method for a very curvy doll).

You will be requested to bring a pre-stitched doll’s leg (or two) in a doll size from 25 cm to 45 cm long), and a Rolling tool in wood or metal (please feel free to use your own if you have one (the tool should be sturdy and has a square section design - not round), or you will be able to buy it from Kamrin (https://www.waldorfdollsupplies.com/a-67545562/hex-key-eklind/hex-key-eklind-4-mm-new/#description).

Wool batting will be provided.

3. Hair Making

Hair is one of the most important and noticeable parts of a doll's appearance, and there are so many ways to make it using natural fibers.

In this class, I’ll be teaching all the intricacies of creating beautiful hair for your doll using animal fiber and special mohair yarn. You will be able to choose
Goat locks (sewn in weft) and a matching mohair yarn from the shop or bring your own weft ***.

We’ll explore the way different fibers create the personality of a woolly child. Depending on the locks you choose for the class, we’ll decide on the best method of creating lovely hair style and together make a wig for your doll.

*** If you’d like to bring your own materials for the class, please contact me for the details.

You will be requested to bring a finished doll or a finished doll’s head for which you will be making a wig. Basic crocheting skills are required for this class.
